The following typeface conventions are used:
/path/name | A path name (directory). |
filename.txt | A file name (with or without a path). |
program | A program, sometimes with a path name. |
---|---|
host.domain.com | A host or machine name, sometimes with a domain attached. |
variable | A variable or varying parameter. |
PATH | An environment variable. |
DPDIR=/opt/dp | A fragment of script or configuration file. |
ls -l | A shell command. |
POP3 | A protocol. |
In many places a sentence naturally ends with a command or file name. A full-stop after a file name is likely to confuse things, so I have adopted the habit of leaving off the final full-stop. The start of a new sentence can be deduced by the initial capital letter.
