Conventions

The following typeface conventions are used:

/path/name A path name (directory).
filename.txt A file name (with or without a path).
program A program, sometimes with a path name.
host.domain.com A host or machine name, sometimes with a domain attached.
variable A variable or varying parameter.
PATH An environment variable.
DPDIR=/opt/dp A fragment of script or configuration file.
ls -l A shell command.
POP3 A protocol.

In many places a sentence naturally ends with a command or file name. A full-stop after a file name is likely to confuse things, so I have adopted the habit of leaving off the final full-stop. The start of a new sentence can be deduced by the initial capital letter.
