Why Not Use the GPL?

I've been gradually becoming less and less enchanted by the Free Software Foundation. I find their obsessiveness and desire for control rather creepy. This is an essay examining various aspects of free and open-source software.

Please send any feedback, comments or abuse to doug@charvolant.org. Any thoughtful (or amusing) responses will be added to this page -- I'll attempt to address them in the next version of this document.

Version 1.1 20-Sep-2000 This version tightens up some of the arguments that were a little wonky or poorly worded. The Linux device driver issue is addressed in more detail. The economic arguments of the FSF are examined with more care. The philosophy of intellectual property is (fleetingly) examined.
Version 1.0 9-Sep-2000 The initial version.
